Pusch Ridge Wilderness Area

Pusch Ridge Wilderness Area is a protected nature reserve within the Coronado National Forest that spans mountainous terrain with varied ecosystems. The land rises from desert lowlands to higher elevations, creating distinct zones with different plants and wildlife.

Congress protected this area in 1978 as part of legislation aimed at conserving endangered wilderness regions across the country. The designation was created to safeguard native wildlife populations including bighorn sheep from human development.

Geological surveys conducted in 1979 collected 55 rock samples for gold and silver analysis, contributing to mineral resource documentation.

The area is open to hiking with multiple trails offering different levels of difficulty for various skill levels. Overnight visitors need to obtain permits before entering the wilderness.

The southern slopes display striking white quartzite bands formed by steep geological structures that stand out against the surrounding rocks. These formations are especially visible when approaching from certain hiking paths.
