Deming

Deming is a city in Luna County, New Mexico located roughly 33 miles from the Mexican border at an elevation of 1,321 meters (4,337 feet). The surroundings feature desert rock formations and mountain ranges that shape the landscape.

The Southern Pacific and Rio Grande railroads met at Deming on March 8, 1881, completing a major transcontinental railway connection. This junction brought growth and economic activity to what was then a small settlement.

The Deming Luna Mimbres Museum displays objects from the Mimbres people, who lived in this region roughly a thousand years ago and created pottery with intricate designs. The collection lets visitors learn about the artistic traditions of these earlier inhabitants and see their craftsmanship up close.

Deming is served by Interstate 10 connecting to major cities, with a municipal airport handling private flights and the Union Pacific Railroad providing freight services. The town functions as a practical hub with these transportation options available.

Every August, Deming hosts the Great American Duck Race, where participants race ducks through water courses and dry tracks to compete for prizes. This offbeat annual event is known in the region for its lighthearted and playful character.
