Guadalupe Mountains National Park

The Guadalupe Mountains rise 1000 meters above the Chihuahuan Desert, featuring limestone cliffs, deep canyons, and the highest point in Texas at 2,667 meters.

Native American tribes inhabited these mountains until the mid-19th century, when the Butterfield Overland Stage Line established the first transcontinental mail route in 1858.

Ancient limestone formations within the park contain evidence of human presence dating back over 10,000 years, including artifacts from Puebloan and Mogollon peoples.

The park maintains 80 kilometers of trails through desert and mountain terrain, with McKittrick Canyon and Dog Canyon among the principal hiking destinations.

The mountain range contains the Capitan Reef, a fossilized marine barrier that formed 250 million years ago when this region was an underwater sea.
