Truth or Consequences, Desert city in Sierra County, New Mexico, United States
Truth or Consequences is a desert town in Sierra County, New Mexico, that stretches along the Rio Grande. The natural hot springs flow from underground chambers into numerous bathhouses and thermal complexes scattered across the downtown area.
The settlement began in the late 19th century as Hot Springs and served travelers coming for the healing thermal waters. In 1950, the community voted to change its name to Truth or Consequences, after a nationally broadcast quiz program.
The name comes from an American radio show in the 1950s, and this origin remains visible in the town's identity today. Locals use the public thermal baths throughout the year, connecting daily life with the therapeutic water of the region.
Most thermal bathhouses sit within walking distance of downtown and open most days of the week. Visitors should bring towels and swimwear, as not all facilities provide them.
The annual radio anniversary in March commemorates the broadcast that led to the renaming, with free admission to many thermal baths during that weekend. The original host Ralph Edwards visited the town every year until his death in 2005.
