Fort Stanton, Military fort in Lincoln County, New Mexico, US

Fort Stanton is a military complex from the 1850s with adobe buildings including officers' quarters, barracks, and a hospital arranged across high desert land. The structures display how frontier soldiers lived and worked during that era.

The fort was founded in 1855 to protect settlers from Apache raids and later became important during Union and Confederate conflicts. It then served as a medical facility for many decades afterward.

The fort served as a tuberculosis sanatorium in the early 1900s, when the dry air and high altitude were believed to aid patient recovery. This medical purpose shaped how people used and experienced the place for decades.

The grounds can be explored on guided tours with museum exhibits and informational signs explaining the history and daily life. Visit during cooler months when the desert sun is less intense.

The fort contains layers of history spanning hundreds of years, from Native American settlements through military use to German prisoner internment during World War II. These overlapping chapters reveal a more complex story than many visitors expect.
