La Aurora International Airport, International airport in Zone 13, Guatemala City, Guatemala
La Aurora International Airport is an international airport in Zone 13 of the capital city, featuring two terminals and a paved runway. The facility sits at 1,509 meters (4,950 feet) elevation and serves both civil and military purposes.
The airport expanded considerably during World War II when the United States Army Air Forces established a military base there. This military presence led to major infrastructure improvements that continue to serve travelers today.
The name comes from Guatemala's first printed periodical, which appeared in 1729 under the title La Gaceta de Guatemala, later renamed Aurora. This connection to the country's early press is reflected in how this hub brings news and people into the region.
The airport lies about six kilometers from the city center and operates around the clock. Check-in counters typically open in the early morning and late evening for international flights.
The runway runs almost parallel to a deep volcanic ravine, so landing planes often glide over steep slopes. This elevation and surrounding topography make takeoffs and landings here a particular challenge for pilots.
