Soto Cano Air Base, Military air base in Comayagua, Honduras
Soto Cano Air Base is a military air installation located in the Comayagua Valley that hosts approximately 550 U.S. military personnel alongside more than 600 civilian workers from both the United States and Honduras. The base functions across six operational departments with accommodations, training facilities, and medical services for those stationed there.
The air base began operations in 1940 when Honduras relocated its air force academy from the capital to Palmerola in the Comayagua Valley. Since then, the installation has served as a center for flight training and aerial operations in the region.
The base maintains a collaborative environment where US military members work alongside Honduran personnel while respecting local customs and constitutional requirements.
Access to the base is restricted and requires official authorization and security clearance, as it is a closed military facility. Visitors should contact relevant authorities in advance to inquire whether tours or visits are permitted under specific circumstances.
Medical teams from the installation regularly conduct health missions throughout Central America, bringing care to communities that have limited access to modern medical services. This humanitarian work extends beyond the base walls into surrounding regions.
