Montaña de Comayagua National Park, National park in Comayagua, Honduras
Montaña de Comayagua National Park is a protected forest area north of the city of Comayagua that includes both original and recovering woodland. The terrain is crossed by several streams and marked walking trails.
The park was officially established in 1987 as a protected area to safeguard the forest ecosystems of the region. This decision became an important shift in environmental protection for central Honduras.
Rio Negro village at the park's edge shows how local communities live alongside protected forest. People here share knowledge about the land and help visitors understand its importance to the region.
Visiting the park requires a vehicle capable of handling unpaved roads branching from the La Libertad highway near San Jeronimo. The best time to hike is during the drier months when the trails are easier to navigate.
A waterfall called Cascada de los Ensueños drops about 50 meters down Rio Gavilan and forms the endpoint of a one-hour trail into the forest. The path passes through dense vegetation and is often accompanied by calls of birds and forest animals.
