Garzón, Religious municipality in Huila Department, Colombia
Garzón is a municipality located in central Huila Department at about 828 meters in elevation. The Magdalena and Suaza rivers flow through the region, supporting the agricultural activities that sustain the local economy.
The settlement began in 1775 when Vicente Manrique de Lara donated land, leading to its official founding in 1783. It gained municipal status by 1788.
This place serves as the diocesan center for Huila, and its churches including the Cathedral shape how residents gather and observe their traditions. The religious buildings are woven into daily life and mark important moments for the community.
Visitors can reach this municipality by bus from Neiva, the departmental capital, with the journey taking about two hours. Regular bus services connect the two places throughout the day.
The name comes from a type of heron that early Spanish colonizers spotted near the river. The waterway was originally called Tocheré before the name changed to reflect the bird that lived there.
