Chapelle Notre-Dame de la Candelaria

Capilla de Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria is a colonial chapel in Montebello with thick mud-brick walls covered in lime and manure plaster. The rectangular structure features a stone platform with three steps that serves as its entrance area.

The chapel was built in the early 17th century during Colombia's colonial period as a place of worship. It gained national monument status in 1984 through an official decree recognizing its historical importance.

The chapel displays colonial altarpieces featuring the Virgin of Candelaria at the center with statues of Saint Barbara and Saint Anthony. These religious artworks shape the interior and reflect how the community honored these holy figures.

The chapel is located at the end of a narrow street in Sabaletas, making it easy to find by walking through the neighborhood. The small interior can be explored quickly, making it ideal for a brief visit between other activities.

Inside the chapel are treasures such as a silver monstrance, antique ornaments, and a small Christ figure from Quito that reflect the religious wealth of the building. These objects came from different parts of the Spanish colonial world and show the far-reaching trade connections of that era.
