The Basílica de Nuestra Señora de las Mercedes is a Gothic Revival church of pale grey and white masonry on the main square of Chinchiná. Its central facade rises into a steep spire with an openwork lattice of pointed arches and crosses, flanked by two lower tower sections with pinnacles. Three recessed pointed-arch entrances stand at ground level, with lancet windows and a rose window above; a lower wing to the right ends in a small domed cupola.

The church was built in Gothic style and received its designation as a minor basilica in 2009 through a decree from the Congregation for Divine Worship. This recognition elevated it among Colombia's religious structures and connected local faith with the international church hierarchy.

The basilica serves as a gathering place for the Catholic community in this coffee-growing region and plays a central role in the city's religious life.

The basilica is located on the main square of the city and is easily accessible with regular mass services open to the public. Visitors should be aware that access may be limited during services, so it helps to check opening times beforehand.

The basilica was the last of Colombia's 26 minor basilicas to be erected when it received the title on 24 September 2009, the feast of Our Lady of Mercy; the decree came from the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments. The title was proclaimed during a Mass on 30 November 2009 presided over by Apostolic Nuncio Aldo Cavalli, after the church's dedication was renewed the previous evening by Archbishop Gonzalo Restrepo Restrepo.
