Belén de Bajirá, corregimiento of Colombia
Nuevo Belén de Bajirá is a municipality in Chocó department, Colombia, comprised of ten township divisions and fifty-seven rural settlements. The area is known for producing palm oil, cacao, and plantains along with cattle ranching, and contains mineral resources including gold, nickel, and copper beneath the surface.
Nuevo Belén de Bajirá was officially established in 2023 after the community fought for recognition over many years. The Chocó Departmental Assembly approved the creation through an ordinance, granting the population greater autonomy over their resources and decisions.
Nuevo Belén de Bajirá reflects a rural culture deeply connected to the land and agricultural work. The community maintains its traditions through simple celebrations and a way of life rooted in nature and the territory's history.
The place sits near National Park Los Katíos and the Atrato River, making it accessible for visitors interested in nature and rural life. Infrastructure is still developing, so visitors should be flexible about facilities and access to basic services.
As Colombia's newest municipality, it was inaugurated in 2024 with its first mayor, Leopoldino Perea Caicedo. This unusual status makes it a place where one can witness a newly forming local government and administrative structures taking shape.
