Santa Teresa, Costa Rica, human settlement in Costa Rica

Santa Teresa is a coastal settlement in Puntarenas Province that stretches for several kilometers along beaches known for waves. The main town center has restaurants, shops, and accommodations of various sizes, while nearby beaches like Playa Hermosa and Mal Pais offer quieter alternatives.

The settlement began as a small fishing village and grew over recent decades into a popular destination for surfers and travelers. This development brought more restaurants, accommodations, and services to the area while the relaxed character remained partly intact.

The town takes its name from the main beach and has become a gathering place for people from around the world seeking a laid-back way of life. The streets show a blend of locals and travelers mixing together in cafes, on the sand, and exploring on vehicles throughout the day.

Visitors should expect unpaved roads, especially during the rainy season from May to November, and rent a high-clearance vehicle for easier navigation. The nearest ATM is in Playa Carmen, so it is wise to withdraw cash beforehand or visit that town before heading into the remote area.

Tortuga Island is a popular day-trip destination reachable by boat from Montezuma, where visitors can snorkel, see sea turtles and colorful fish, and have lunch under palm trees. The boat journey itself takes around 45 minutes and offers views of waterfalls and the coastline.
