San Miguelito District, Urban district in Panama Province, Panama
San Miguelito is a district within Panama Province, covering roughly fifty square kilometers and surrounded by Panama City. The densely built residential neighborhoods climb gentle hills and smaller ridges, with a network of narrow streets and tight alleys winding through rows of houses.
Workers from the capital moved eastward starting in 1925, founding the first settlements on previously undeveloped land. The community gained status as a separate district in June 1960 and grew rapidly in the following decades into a major residential area.
The name honors the archangel Michael, a common patron in Latin American settlements, and reflects the religious roots of the early inhabitants. Small shops and street stalls line the main roads, offering everyday goods and shaping the local streetscape through their activity on weekdays.
Small buses run on set routes through the hilly streets, offering an affordable way to reach different neighborhoods. Visitors should wear comfortable shoes, as many residential areas sit on slopes and are best explored on foot.
Local authorities are considering a nine-kilometer aerial cable car system to bridge height differences and make certain residential areas easier to reach. Such a system would represent the country's first overhead transport and arise as a response to difficult traffic conditions.
