Omar Torrijos Park, Urban park in San Francisco district, Panama City, Panama
Omar Torrijos Park is a large green space in the San Francisco district of Panama City, covering 56 hectares (138 acres) with sports fields, walking paths and tropical vegetation. Native trees and plants frame the different recreation zones and create shaded areas along the walkways.
The site was an exclusive golf club from 1952 until General Omar Torrijos acquired the land in 1973 and transformed it into a public space. The transformation opened the area to all city residents and ended private access to this large tract.
The place carries the name of General Omar Torrijos, who opened what was once a private club for everyone living in the city. Architect Carlos Raúl Villanueva designed the Flag Monument, which now serves as a gathering point and national symbol.
The park opens daily from four in the morning until ten at night, offering a semi-olympic pool and several sports courts for different activities. Numerous paths allow for walking or running through different sections with shade under the trees.
More than 150 plant species and 120 animal species live in the park, making it an ecological refuge in the middle of the city. This variety also attracts birdwatchers and nature lovers who can encounter rare species right in the urban center.
