Teatro Amira de la Rosa, Cultural performance theater in Barranquilla, Colombia
Teatro Amira de la Rosa is a theater building in Barranquilla located near sports facilities and educational institutions in the El Prado, Montecristo, and Abajo neighborhoods. The main auditorium provides seating for approximately 492 people in the orchestra and balcony sections, while the entire complex can accommodate around 949 people total, including box seats.
The building resulted from an architecture competition won by the firm Zeisel, Magagna & Lignarolo, and the theater opened in 1982. The inauguration took place under President Julio César Turbay Ayala and marked an important moment in the city's cultural development.
The main hall features a large curtain called 'Se va el caimán', created by artist Alejandro Obregón, which shows stories and legends important to people in this Colombian Caribbean region. This artwork connects visitors to local traditions and imagination.
The theater is currently closed and undergoing extensive restoration work expected to continue until 2027, managed by the Banco de la República de Colombia. Visitors should check the current status and any possible viewing opportunities before planning a visit.
The theater closed in 2016 due to structural concerns, triggering the start of comprehensive restoration work. This renewal aims to preserve the building for future generations and restore its original condition.
