Zoologico de barranquilla, Zoo in Localidad Norte - Centro Histórico, Barranquilla, Colombia.
Zoologico de Barranquilla is a zoo in the city featuring more than 700 animals representing around 130 different species. The facility spreads across spacious grounds and houses both native and exotic wildlife from various habitats.
The zoo began in the 1930s on land donated by Tomás Suri Salcedo and was officially opened as Roberto Puyana Zoo in 1953. This founding created an important cultural space in the city that has evolved over many decades.
The zoo serves as a community gathering place where locals and visitors experience wildlife from different regions in one location. It functions as an educational space where people connect with nature and learn about animal diversity.
The zoo is open most days with early morning being the best time to visit when animals are more active. Comfortable shoes and plenty of water are important since the grounds are extensive and heat can be significant.
The facility partners with international zoos in Zurich, Lisbon, Barcelona, and Miami to help preserve and exchange animal species. A white tiger and a spectacled bear are among its remarkable residents, with the latter having been elected zoo president through a children's vote.
