Edificio Intendencia Fluvial, Colonial administrative building in Barranquilla, Colombia
The Intendencia Fluvial is a colonial administrative building in Barranquilla featuring two symmetrical stories with a rectangular form, central columns, and evenly spaced windows on both east and west facades. The structure displays balanced proportions and carefully executed brickwork typical of early 20th-century institutional architecture.
The structure was completed between 1926 and 1928 and managed steam navigation throughout Colombia for more than a decade. Its regulatory role became obsolete during the 1940s as river transportation declined and new infrastructure systems took precedence.
The building now serves as the headquarters of the District Secretary of Culture and hosts rotating art exhibitions that help revitalize Barranquilla's Historic Center. Visitors can experience how the space brings together local artists and community members through regular cultural programming and public events.
The building is located at Via 40 #36-135 in the historic center and maintains regular office hours for visitors. Check ahead about current exhibitions and events to plan your visit and experience the cultural programming on display.
The building received the 2016 Real Estate Excellence Award from FIABCI in the Best Restoration category for its preservation work. This recognition highlights how the reconstruction efforts successfully maintained the original architectural character while adapting the space for modern use.
