Monumento a India Catalina, Bronze monument in Cartagena de Indias, Colombia.
Monumento a India Catalina is a bronze sculpture in Cartagena depicting a female figure standing approximately 3 meters tall. The work was created by Spanish sculptor Eladio Gil Zambrana and shows a woman in draped clothing with an upright posture.
The statue was commissioned in 1974 to honor an indigenous woman who served as an interpreter between Spanish conquistadors and native communities. This historical figure played a key role in early encounters between both cultures in the region.
The monument has become the symbol of the Cartagena Film Festival, with a miniature version serving as the award for winners. The figure is deeply connected to local identity and pride in the city.
The monument stands at the intersection of Pedro de Heredia Avenue and Venezuela Avenue, serving as a central meeting point in the city. This is an easily accessible location that is simple to find and visible from many streets.
The model for the statue was Judith Arrieta, a 15-year-old girl from San Juan Nepomuceno, whose upper body features were incorporated into the design. This choice linked a historical figure with the features of a living person from the local community.
