Los Colorados Fauna and Flora Sanctuary, Flora and fauna sanctuary in San Juan Nepomuceno, Colombia
Los Colorados is a protected forest sanctuary in the Montes de Maria mountains featuring tropical dry woodland and rare species. The reserve shelters native plants and animals found nowhere else in the region, maintaining their natural surroundings.
The area received official protection in 1977 to preserve the threatened forest and its wildlife. It was named after the red howler monkeys whose calls echo through the wooded slopes.
The place draws researchers and school groups who work to understand the forest ecosystem and its wildlife. Visitors witness how local conservation efforts connect people to the land they are protecting.
Bring sturdy shoes, insect repellent, and sun protection since trails wind through forest areas and exposed sections. You must register at the main office in San Juan Nepomuceno before entering the sanctuary.
The sanctuary hosts around 280 bird species, with 45 being migratory visitors that arrive and depart seasonally. It preserves one of the last intact sections of tropical dry forest that once covered much of the Colombian Caribbean.
