Teocaltiche, Municipality in Los Altos de Jalisco, Mexico
Teocaltiche is a municipality in the northeastern highlands of Jalisco, where farmers grow corn, beans, and oats while raising livestock across rolling terrain. Agricultural fields shape the landscape and form the economic foundation for most residents.
Spanish conquistadors Cristóbal de Oñate and Manuel de Ibarra established control of the territory in 1530, shaping the region's colonial development. The Hospital de los Indios was built in 1546 to serve the indigenous population.
Artisans here create hand-woven serapes and wooden chess sets using methods passed down through generations, keeping regional crafts alive in their workshops.
Local transportation serves most of the community, making it easy to move between neighborhoods and surrounding areas. Plan for short travel times when getting around, as distances between main settlements are generally modest.
Residents are known by the demonym Chapulines, named after the grasshopper, which has become a recognized symbol of local identity. The insect holds special meaning in everyday conversation and how people describe themselves.
