Plaza de Toros Monumental de Aguascalientes, Bullring in Aguascalientes, Mexico
The Plaza de Toros Monumental de Aguascalientes is a neo-Mudejar bullring built in red brick, located in the city of Aguascalientes, Mexico. Its facade features several arched entrance gates and ticket windows, while inside the circular arena is surrounded by covered stands.
The arena was inaugurated in 1933 and quickly established itself as one of Mexico's main bullfighting venues. Since then it has hosted generations of bullfighters and become a reference point for the city.
The bullring is closely tied to the Feria de San Marcos, the largest fair in Mexico, held every year in Aguascalientes. During this period, the stands fill with people who see bullfighting as part of a broader popular celebration rather than a standalone event.
The arena is in the city center and can be reached on foot or by public transport from most of downtown Aguascalientes. For events, arriving early is a good idea since the stands tend to fill up well before the start.
Every year on Day of the Dead, a bullfight called the Corrida de Calaveras is held here, where both toreros and spectators dress in skeleton costumes. This mix of bullfighting and Day of the Dead celebration is rare even in Mexico, making the event something apart from any ordinary corrida.
