Barrio Chino, Chinese district in Centro Histórico, Mexico City, Mexico
Barrio Chino is the Chinatown of Mexico City, occupying two blocks along Calle Dolores near the Alameda Central park. The street is tightly packed with restaurants, import shops, and small stores selling Chinese products.
Chinese immigrants began settling in this part of Mexico City in the late 1800s, establishing businesses along what would become the main strip. The community grew steadily over the following decades and shaped the character of the blocks around Calle Dolores.
The street is lined with restaurants, grocery stores, and shops selling Chinese goods, giving the block a character unlike the rest of the city center. During Chinese New Year, decorations, food stalls, and music fill the area and draw visitors from across the city.
The area sits in the heart of Mexico City and is easy to reach on foot from several metro stations. Daytime visits work best, as most shops and restaurants are open and the street is at its most active.
A decorative Chinese gate stands at the entrance of Calle Dolores and is one of the few such structures in the whole country. It was a gift from the Chinese government and marks the formal connection between the two countries.
