Aztec sun stone, Monumental sculpture at National Museum of Anthropology, Mexico.

The circular basalt monolith measures 358 centimeters in diameter and features intricate carvings depicting Aztec deities and astronomical elements.

Created around 1510 by Mexica artisans, the stone remained buried for centuries until its rediscovery in 1790 during construction work near Mexico City Cathedral.

The central disc portrays Tonatiuh, the sun deity, surrounded by symbols representing the four previous cosmic eras in Aztec mythology.

The National Museum of Anthropology displays the stone in the Mexica Hall, where visitors can examine the detailed astronomical and mythological representations.

The stone functions as both a ritual calendar and cosmic diagram, incorporating 20-day months and recording celestial movements within its circular design.
