Las islas

Las Islas is a public garden at the heart of Ciudad Universitaria, featuring wide pathways that connect academic buildings and create spaces for movement and rest. The area includes sections with trees, lawns, and seating where people can sit, study, or simply walk through during their daily activities.

The space was created in the 1950s as part of the master plan for Ciudad Universitaria and followed design principles inspired by European and American university campuses. This early development shaped how the entire campus would function and how students would use open areas.

The space takes its name from former island pools and serves as a central gathering point where students from all faculties meet, study together, and strengthen their university connections. These daily interactions shape the rhythm of campus life and create a shared identity across different academic disciplines.

The garden is accessible during daylight hours and easy to navigate while on campus, with multiple entry points and pathways connecting different areas. Finding a place to sit, rest, or study is straightforward, and the space flows naturally between surrounding academic buildings.

A former building that once served as the main dining and social hub for students still stands within the space and now houses administrative offices. This transformation shows how university spaces adapt as the institution evolves and priorities shift over time.
