Alfredo Guati Rojo National Watercolor Museum, Watercolor art museum in Coyoacán, Mexico
The Alfredo Guati Rojo National Watercolor Museum is an art collection in Coyoacán devoted entirely to watercolor paintings. Seven rooms display around 300 works arranged to show how the technique has developed from early periods through contemporary times.
This institution was established in 1964 by artist Alfredo Guati Rojo and moved to Coyoacán in 1987 after a natural disaster affected its previous location. The relocation allowed the museum to continue its mission in a new setting and expand its role in the artistic community.
This place serves as a gathering point for artists and collectors who value watercolor as a distinct form of expression. Visitors encounter contemporary works displayed alongside historical pieces that show how the technique has been used across different periods.
The museum is located within walking distance of Coyoacan's main areas, making it easy to include in a neighborhood visit. Plan enough time to view the collection comfortably, as the seven rooms contain detailed works that reward careful looking.
This was the first museum anywhere to focus exclusively on watercolor paintings as an art form. Visitors often overlook how much artistic variety exists within this single technique, discovering an entire world of expression that few other places showcase in such concentrated form.
