Cerro de las Minas

Cerro de las Minas, Archaeological site in Huajuapan de León, Mexico.

Cerro de las Minas is an archaeological site spread across a hilltop, featuring earthen mounds, a ball court, and residential zones arranged with terraced structures. Multiple ceremonial areas are visible throughout the complex, showing how the settlement was organized.

The settlement began in the early centuries and became a major center for the Mixtec civilization in the region. It remained a focal point for hundreds of years, reflecting the growth and changes of this society.

The place displays pottery and objects that reveal how the Mixtec people expressed their beliefs and daily life through craftsmanship. Walking through the excavated areas, you can observe the remnants of their artistic traditions and practical skills.

You can walk through the main structures and read informational signs at various spots explaining what archaeologists have found. It is best to wear comfortable shoes and arrive early, as you will spend time walking across the hilly terrain.

This is the only easily accessible Mixtec site in lowland terrain, setting it apart from other known settlements in mountain areas. The unearthed objects, including obsidian and metalwork, reveal that inhabitants traded across long distances with distant communities.
