San Nicolás de los Garza, Metropolitan municipality in Monterrey region, Mexico.
San Nicolás de los Garza is a large city in the metropolitan area of Monterrey in the state of Nuevo León, Mexico. The urban territory extends across several districts with residential neighborhoods, industrial zones and a central area where shops and administrative buildings stand.
The settlement emerged in the late 16th century as a landed estate of Pedro de la Garza and received the status of an independent municipality in 1830. Development into a city occurred in the mid-20th century when industrial plants settled here and the growth of Monterrey spread to the surrounding area.
The state university maintains a large campus here with faculties for engineering, architecture and other disciplines. Students shape the street scene especially in the neighborhoods near the campus, where bookshops, affordable eateries and coffee shops line up next to each other.
The city lies directly north of Monterrey and connects to the center of the metropolitan area via several main roads. Visitors here will find shopping centers, parks and university facilities mostly easy to reach by public transport or taxi.
The name of the city refers to the patron saint San Nicolás de Bari, while the addition Garza recalls the founding family. This connection between religious devotion and regional history also appears in street names and older buildings in the center.
