It is one of the largest and most powerful ancient cities ever uncovered in the Maya lowlands.
Calakmul was a major Maya power within the northern Petén region of the Yucatán Peninsula of Mexico.
The site is open to visitors, with several walking trails and camping facilities.
Calakmul is notable for its 120 stelae, the largest total in the region.
