Balamku

Balamku, Maya archaeological site in Campeche, Mexico.

Balamku is a Maya archaeological complex in Campeche with four main architectural sections spread across the landscape. The site displays pyramids, plazas, and residential structures arranged in groups that reflect how people organized their spaces.

The site was first occupied around 300 BC and reached its architectural peak between 300 and 600 AD during the Early Classic period. Most of the structures you see today were built during this flourishing time.

The name comes from Yucatec Maya, where balam means jaguar and ku means temple, showing how important this animal was in sacred spaces here.

The site welcomes visitors daily, allowing you to explore the different groups at your own pace. Wear comfortable shoes and arrive early, as the terrain is uneven and can be dusty.

One of the largest preserved stucco friezes in the Maya world was found here, discovered in 1990 while investigating archaeological looting. This artwork reveals the craftsmanship and artistic skill of the Maya artisans.
