Balamku, Maya archaeological site in Campeche, Mexico.
The archaeological complex extends over 25 hectares with four main architectural sections: Central Group, North Group, South Group, and Southwest Group.
The site was first occupied around 300 BC, reaching its architectural peak between 300 and 600 AD during the Early Classic period.
The name Balamku stems from Yucatec Maya language, where balam means jaguar and ku means temple, reflecting the sacred importance of this animal.
The site opens daily from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM with an entrance fee of 40 pesos, while Mexican nationals enter free on Sundays with identification.
The site contains one of the largest preserved stucco friezes in the Maya world, discovered in 1990 during an investigation of archaeological looting.
