Grutas de García, Show cave in Sierra del Fraile mountain, Mexico
Grutas de García is a cave system beneath the Sierra del Fraile mountain, featuring multiple connected chambers filled with limestone formations. The complex reaches depths of around 105 meters below the surface.
The cave formed millions of years ago when this area was covered by an ancient sea, as evidenced by fossils visible in the walls. Over time, geological forces lifted the rock layers and exposed these underground passages.
The cave chambers bear names like El Teatro and La Torre China, showing how local tradition has long interpreted and named these underground spaces.
An aerial cable car transports visitors directly to the cave entrance, avoiding a steep mountain climb. The visit involves moderate walking, with rest areas and viewing points available along the way.
One of the chambers has a translucent rock ceiling that allows natural sunlight to filter directly into the underground space. This rare feature creates a memorable light effect deep within the mountain.
