Nuevo León, State administrative division in northeastern Mexico

Nuevo León sits in northeastern Mexico and covers mountains, plains and coastal zones. The landscape shifts between the Sierra Madre Oriental range in the west and flatter areas in the east with rivers and valleys.

Spanish settlers established the first communities in this territory in 1582. After the Mexican Revolution, towns grew rapidly with factories and industry arriving in the early twentieth century.

Families gather in plazas and restaurants to listen to norteño music played on accordions and bajo sextos. Local communities organize street festivals and open-air markets where regional crafts and traditional foods appear throughout the year.

Most visitors stay in the Monterrey metro area where public transport connects neighborhoods and districts. Those heading to the mountains or smaller towns should rent a car because connections are limited outside the main city.

This region produces nearly one tenth of Mexico's economic output even though only a few percent of the population lives here. The concentration of industry and services makes it an important economic center in the country.
