Edinburg, County seat in South Texas, United States
Edinburg is a county seat in South Texas that sits 29 meters above sea level, with U.S. Route 281 running through its eastern edge toward the Mexican border. The city contains the Dustin Michael Sekula Memorial Library, wetland areas, and several educational institutions serving Hidalgo County.
The settlement began as Chapin when founded in 1908, then received its current name in 1911 to honor John Young, a businessman from Edinburgh in Scotland. The renaming recognized the Scottish roots of an important supporter of the town.
The Museum of South Texas History displays artifacts and documents that trace how people lived in the Rio Grande Valley across different eras. Visitors walk through galleries that show daily life from ancient times to the recent past.
The Dustin Michael Sekula Memorial Library offers educational resources, internet access, and community programs for Hidalgo County residents. The library sits centrally and serves as a useful stop for information about the region.
The Edinburg Scenic Wetlands belongs to the World Birding Center network and covers 40 acres (16 hectares) of gardens and ponds that support native wildlife. Visitors can walk on trails through the wetland and watch birds that live in this habitat.
