Resaca de la Palma State Park, Wildlife observation site in Cameron County, US.
Resaca de la Palma State Park is a 1,200-acre property that protects wetlands, mature ebony woodlands, and mesquite savannas situated along an ancient riverbed of the Rio Grande. Three distinct ecological zones within the park support different plant and animal communities adapted to each environment.
The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department purchased this land in 1977 with the goal of creating a public nature area. The park officially opened to visitors in December 2008 after several years of restoration and development work.
The park serves as a birding destination where visitors encounter species that shape the region's natural identity and draw people from around the world. Local guides share knowledge about the birds and plants, making conservation a visible part of the visitor experience.
Visitors leave their cars at the entrance and explore the park on foot, bicycle, or tram service depending on their preference and ability. Walking paths connect the main areas and allow people to move at their own pace through the landscape.
The park carefully maintains water levels in a resaca, an ancient riverbed of the Rio Grande, to support animal species found nowhere else in the United States. This deliberate water management is essential to keep these rare habitats functioning and alive.
