Perdido, Oil platform in Gulf of Mexico, United States
Perdido is an oil extraction platform operating in the Gulf of Mexico at extreme ocean depths. It was designed to drill for oil and natural gas in remote offshore locations far from the Texas coastline.
The platform began operating in 2010, representing a major advance in deep-water oil extraction technology. Shortly after, a major incident in the region led to increased scrutiny of offshore drilling safety practices.
The platform supports 100 to 300 skilled workers who maintain continuous operations while residing in isolated conditions far from shore for extended periods.
This platform cannot be visited by the public, as it is a specialized work site restricted to authorized personnel. The structure sits hundreds of kilometers offshore and operates as a continuously staffed industrial facility.
The facility processes up to 100,000 barrels of oil daily, generating sufficient energy to supply over two million households for an expected 20-year period.
