Katy is a residential city in the Greater Houston area in Texas, spreading across parts of Harris County, Fort Bend County and Waller County. Single-family homes, schools and shopping centers line the streets, while parks and pathways sit between the neighborhoods.
A railroad junction formed in the 1890s when the Missouri-Kansas-Texas Railroad ran through the area. The settlement grew slowly and was officially incorporated as a city in 1945.
The name comes from the Missouri-Kansas-Texas Railroad, whose MKT initials residents shortened to Katy. Rice fields that once covered the area have given way to residential neighborhoods, though the farming heritage still appears at local festivals and in the way neighbors gather and talk.
Interstate 10 runs through the city and connects it directly to downtown Houston to the east. Visitors traveling by car will find gas stations and rest stops along the main roads, while public transport options in this area are limited.
The school district operates more than 70 schools, making it one of the largest in Texas. Many families move here because of the numerous educational facilities and sports programs that run year-round.
