USS Stewart, Military museum ship in Galveston, United States.
The USS Stewart is a preserved destroyer escort stretching about 306 feet and containing original naval equipment, weapons, and crew quarters from World War II operations. The vessel features multiple decks, engine rooms, and combat stations that visitors can walk through.
The ship was built in Houston in 1942 and served as an Edsall-class destroyer escort during World War II. Between 1943 and 1945, it completed roughly 30 convoy crossings of the North Atlantic.
The ship carries the name of Rear Admiral Charles Stewart, who led USS Constitution during the War of 1812. This connection links two different periods of American naval history through a single name.
The ship is located at Seawolf Park in Galveston and remains open to visitors year-round. Plan to spend several hours exploring the various decks and compartments throughout the vessel.
This vessel is one of only two remaining destroyer escorts in the United States and the sole surviving example of its Edsall-class design. Its rarity makes it an important record of this particular warship class.
