Bolivar Bridge, Road bridge between Galveston Island and Bolivar Peninsula, US.
Bolivar Bridge was a proposed road bridge connecting Galveston Island to the Bolivar Peninsula in Texas. The project aimed to provide a permanent alternative to the established ferry crossing between these two areas.
Planning for the bridge started in 2000 when the Texas Department of Transportation sought to replace the ferry service operating since the 1930s. The project was ultimately cancelled in 2007 due to lack of sufficient funding and political support.
The bridge name honors Simon Bolivar, reflecting the regional connection to Latin American history and the spirit of transportation development in Texas.
The planned bridge would have offered a faster crossing for vehicles and pedestrians compared to the ferry service. Since the project was not completed, visitors and residents continue to use the ferry as the main transportation option between the two areas.
The proposed bridge structure would have replaced the current ferry system, which costs approximately 12 million dollars annually to maintain.
