Lake Jackson, Industrial city in Brazoria County, Texas, United States
Lake Jackson covers around 21 square miles of land and water near the Gulf Coast, sitting only about 13 feet (4 meters) above sea level. The town sits in a flat coastal plain with residential neighborhoods spreading out radially from the center.
The town was founded in 1942 as a company settlement for Dow Chemical Company employees on the former Abner Jackson Plantation site. The original plantation land covered roughly 5000 acres and was completely transformed into the new residential community.
The Festival of Lights transforms private homes into glowing displays through a decorating contest that draws neighbors together. This winter tradition shows how residents take pride in decorating their town and celebrating as a community.
The local library offers access to resources and services as part of the Brazoria County system. Education facilities are managed by the Brazosport Independent School District, which operates several schools across the area.
The streets follow a radial pattern from downtown, with some bearing the unusual names This Way and That Way. When the town was planned, existing trees were preserved so many roads today are lined with older growth.
