Lynn R. Lowrey Arboretum, Botanical garden at Rice University in Houston, United States
The Lynn R. Lowrey Arboretum spans across Rice University campus and displays more than 4,000 trees and shrubs from different woody plant species. The collection spreads throughout the university grounds and shows a wide variety of botanical specimens.
The arboretum was founded in 1999 and marked its start with the planting of five trees including oaks and other native varieties. Since its establishment, the collection has grown into a significant botanical resource on the campus grounds.
The site focuses on plant varieties from Texas and northeastern Mexico, as well as woody plant groups found in eastern North America. Many trees and shrubs were chosen to reflect the natural vegetation of these regions.
The arboretum is free to visit daily and can be explored on foot while walking through the university grounds. It helps to wear comfortable shoes since the collection is spread across large areas of the campus.
The university has received the Tree Campus USA award from the Arbor Day Foundation multiple times since 2012, showing strong commitment to the care and protection of its tree collection. This recognition highlights the professional management of the botanical resource.
