Texas Hill Country, Geographic region in Central Texas, United States

Texas Hill Country is a large geographic region in central Texas, characterized by rolling limestone hills and wooded valleys that stretch across more than two dozen counties. The hills rise in elevations roughly 120 to 150 meters (400 to 500 feet) above surrounding plains, creating a varied landscape of clear rivers and springs.

During the 1840s, settlers from Tennessee, Arkansas, and Missouri moved into the valleys while German-speaking immigrants followed the Upper Emigrant Road westward. These two streams shaped settlement patterns and left communities with different traditions along the river valleys.

The legacy of German-speaking migrants remains visible in place names, limestone architecture, and wine cellars scattered across the slopes. Several towns preserve handed-down recipes and celebrate spring wildflower blooms with festivals and music.

The underground aquifer feeds numerous springs that supply water to towns and smaller settlements across the region, just as they have for generations. Visitors traveling by car or on foot should expect gravel roads and winding routes through the hilly terrain.

At Enchanted Rock, the second-largest granite dome in the United States rises above the rolling hills, a solitary formation visible from far above the river. Early travelers used this landmark for orientation, and today its rock formations draw hikers and climbers.
