Big Spring State Park, State park on Scenic Mountain in Big Spring, Texas.
Big Spring State Park is a 382-acre area on Scenic Mountain featuring limestone rock formations and desert vegetation throughout. A three-mile paved loop road circles the mountain and connects the main areas of the park.
The park was built in 1934 by the Civilian Conservation Corps, a work program during the economic depression. Workers quarried limestone on-site to construct lasting structures including a headquarters building and pavilion.
The name comes from a natural spring that drew people to the location for generations and served as a gathering point. This heritage shapes how visitors today experience the mountain as a meeting place within the desert landscape.
The mountain has hiking trails, mountain biking paths, and picnic areas for different activities. Visitors find restroom facilities and a shop at the summit where you get views across the surrounding area.
During summer months the Big Spring Film Society shows movies under the stars at the mountain summit. These outdoor screenings offer an unusual experience of film and nature in the same location.
