Austin-Bergstrom International Airport, Commercial airport in southeast Austin, United States.
Austin-Bergstrom International Airport is a commercial airport in southeast Austin serving travelers heading to destinations across North America and beyond. The Barbara Jordan Terminal spreads over two floors with restaurants, shops, and waiting areas designed to accommodate passengers between flights.
The site served as a military base until the mid-1990s, when the city converted the land for civilian air travel. Opening in 1999 replaced the older Robert Mueller Municipal Airport, which had become too small to handle growing passenger traffic.
Live musicians perform regularly inside the terminal, bringing the music scene visitors associate with Austin into the building itself. Travelers often hear guitarists and singer-songwriters near the security checkpoints, playing the sounds that helped define the city's reputation.
The airport sits about 5 miles (8 kilometers) southeast of downtown and connects via State Highway 71. Buses run regularly between the terminal and central Austin, while taxis and rental cars are available outside the terminal building.
The building uses solar panels on the roof to generate part of its electricity and collects rainwater to irrigate the landscaping around the terminal. These features reduce resource use and reflect the environmental concerns many Austin residents hold.
