Anderson Stadium, Historic stadium in East Austin, United States
Anderson Stadium is a sports venue in East Austin with a grass playing field circled by a running track, all nestled within a natural bowl-shaped landform. This distinctive terrain created natural seating on the sloping sides around the field.
The venue was built in 1953 and served the L.C. Anderson High School, one of few schools for African American students in Austin at the time. When the school closed in 1971 due to federal desegregation orders, the facility's regular use came to an end.
This venue served as a central gathering place where East Austin's Black community came together for football games and local events that brought neighbors into conversation. The space held deep meaning as a hub of community connection and shared pride.
The location is accessible by car or on foot, with parking available on site in East Austin. Visitors will find updated facilities including restrooms and a renovated building with additional amenities for comfortable visits.
This is the only high school football stadium in Texas that was built specifically for African American students during the segregation era. Its survival to the present day makes it an important witness to this pivotal chapter in the state's history.
