Federal Correctional Institution, Bastrop, US federal prison
Federal Correctional Institution, Bastrop is a low-security federal prison for men in Bastrop County, Texas. The facility includes a separate minimum-security satellite camp that operates without a perimeter fence.
The facility opened in 1979 and has run as a federal low-security prison ever since. In 2009, two inmates escaped from the satellite camp, stole a government vehicle, and were caught six days later by Mexican authorities near the Texas-Mexico border.
Visits are generally allowed on weekends and certain other days, but calling ahead to confirm current visiting hours is strongly recommended. Security procedures apply at the entrance, so arriving prepared and knowing the rules in advance will help.
The satellite camp operates without any perimeter fence, which is unusual for a correctional facility and reflects the lowest official security level. Inmates there are not physically enclosed but are expected to remain on the grounds without walls or fences enforcing that.
