Fort Cavazos, Military training installation in Killeen, United States
Fort Cavazos spreads across roughly 215,000 acres (about 87,000 hectares) in central Texas, serving as a major training site with grounds for armored units and military testing facilities. The base combines wide maneuver areas with residential zones for soldiers and their families.
The base opened in 1942 as Camp Hood, primarily training tank destroyer units during the Second World War. Over the decades, it grew into one of the largest military installations in the United States.
The installation carries the name of General Richard E. Cavazos, honoring the first Hispanic four-star general in American military history. His legacy remains present in the daily work of the units stationed there.
The site sits between Austin and Waco, giving people who work there access to city services within about 60 miles (roughly 100 kilometers). Entry is restricted and requires proper authorization.
The base can house and train two full armored divisions at the same time, a capacity no other military installation in the United States offers. This scale allows large combined maneuvers on a single site.
