Rockdale, city in Milam County, Texas, United States
Rockdale is a small city in Milam County, Texas, situated in the Post Oak Prairie region and located along Highway 79 between Austin and Bryan-College Station. Rockdale's roots trace to Spanish colonial times in the 1500s when explorers visited the region, and later missions were built along the Brazos River. The town's growth accelerated in 1874 when the International & Great Northern Railroad was built, establishing Rockdale as a station and enabling the boom in cotton farming and later lignite coal mining.
The name Rockdale refers to the rocky terrain and proximity to the Brazos River. The town still reflects its diverse past today, as seen in the Jewish Cemetery established around 1879, which holds Civil War veterans and shows how different communities coexisted in the town's early days.
The best starting point for visitors is the Visitor Center in the renovated depot on Main Street, open on weekends and offering information and guided walking tours of historic sites. The town is easily reached via Highway 79 and offers several small shops, restaurants, and parks to explore, with good pedestrian access in the downtown area.
The Rainbow Courts Motel is the oldest family-owned motel in Texas and the Southwest, preserving the history of early American travel. The property remains a fascinating window into how travelers were accommodated in the region during the mid-20th century.
