Fairfield Lake State Park, State park in Freestone County, United States.
Fairfield Lake State Park is a recreation area with a 2,400-acre lake surrounded by forest that offers water activities for visitors. The grounds feature an extensive trail system for hiking that winds through the natural landscape.
The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department acquired the land in 1976 and established recreational facilities there. The lake itself was created by a dam built by Texas Power and Light Company in 1969.
The Chancellor Union Cemetery within the park contains graves of early settlers and military veterans from different periods. This burial ground shows how long the area has been inhabited and what history runs deep here.
The park offers more than a hundred camping spots with vehicle pads, grilling areas, and fire rings for guests. Restroom facilities and showers are available to make your stay comfortable.
The site closed in 2023 after a private developer purchased the land and state authorities attempted unsuccessfully to reclaim it. This unexpected turn of events highlights the tensions between conservation and private ownership in the region.
