Nacogdoches, County seat in East Texas, United States.
Nacogdoches sits on gentle hills in East Texas, where wide streets lined with magnolia trees meet a historic core that stretches over several blocks. The town connects older residential neighborhoods with the university campus, which winds through parks and sports facilities.
Spanish missionaries founded a settlement here in 1716, which later became the oldest continuously inhabited place in Texas. After Texan independence, the settlement transformed into a trading center and gained railroad access in the nineteenth century.
Downtown brick buildings from the late nineteenth century stand alongside university facilities that shape daily life through events and research. Spring and early summer festivals draw families from the surrounding region who gather between stalls and stages.
The historic core is easy to explore on foot, as most buildings and shops lie within a few streets. The university on the edge of town requires a car if you plan to visit its facilities or attend events.
Oil drilling began nearby in 1859, decades before other finds gained statewide attention. This early operation remained largely overlooked and was overshadowed by the later oil boom.
