Sterne-Hoya House Museum and Library
Sterne-Hoya House Museum and Library, Historical house museum in Nacogdoches, United States.
The Sterne-Hoya House is a wood-frame dwelling on brick piers with a Victorian porch, located in downtown Nacogdoches and set up as a museum. The one-and-a-half-story structure retains its original spatial layout and period furnishings throughout the rooms.
The house was built in 1830 by merchant Adolphus Sterne and quickly became a gathering place for leaders during the Texas Revolution. It held importance because major political and military figures met there during this crucial period of the region's history.
The house takes its name from two families who lived here across generations, each leaving behind personal objects that tell their stories. Walking through the rooms shows how these households functioned and what mattered most to them.
The museum sits in downtown Nacogdoches and is accessible on foot from nearby streets and businesses. Check ahead for current opening hours and any seasonal closures before planning your visit.
The property contains one of the first wine cellars constructed in Texas, showing how early settlers kept their European habits even while settling a new region. This underground space tells us about the daily practices of a wealthy family adapting to life in a frontier area.
